Amazon.com Review As the old saying goes, "War is hell." But it's much more than that, as The Quotable Soldier reveals. This collection of quotations about war and soldiering is organized loosely by theme: "The Call to Battle," "Under Fire," "At Ease," "The Fallen," and so on. The comments date from ancient times to Desert Storm. They come from historic battlefields, including Thermopylae, Bunker Hill, Waterloo, the Somme, Iwo Jima, and Chosin Reservoir; and they were made by such famous battle-tested figures as Sun Tzu, Philip of Macedon, Clara Barton, Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, and Norman Schwarzkopf, among many others. Some were selected for their inspirational quality (Garibaldi's "Let him who loves his country with his heart, and not merely with his lips, follow me"); others for their irony ("They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance"--Union Major General John Sedgwick, just moments before a Confederate sharpshooter's bullet struck him under the left eye, killing him instantly); and still others for their gritty accounts of what it was like to be under fire. Perfect for browsing, The Quotable Soldier is a great little book for fans of military history. --M. Stein
Product Description "I hear a lot of crap about what a glorious thing it is to die for your country. It isn't glorious, it's stupid. You don't go into battle to die for your country, you go into battle to make the other bastard die for his country."--General George S. Patton Jr. "War is a matter of vital importance to the State; the province of life or death; the road to survival or ruin. It is mandatory that it be thoroughly studied."--Sun Tzu "Here me, my chiefs! I am tired; my heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever." --Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce The Quotable Soldier is a full and balanced collection of the best quotations about war and those who go to war. From Thucydides to General Schwartzkopf, here are words on why men go to war, the challenge of human courage, the strategy of great battles and campaigns, the horrors of war, and much more. It covers the breadth of history, from the battles of ancient times through the Napoleonic and World Wars and on into the complicated conflicts of Korea, Vietnam, and Desert Storm. This is one of the most compelling, challenging, and comprehensive collections of quotes about war and soldiering ever assembled. Included are comments by: * Stephen Ambrose * Thomas Paine * Lord Byron * Philip of Macedon * Philip Caputo * Erwin Rommel * David Douglas Duncan * Theodore Roosevelt * Dwight D. Eisenhower * Bill D. Ross * Shelby Foote * Norman Schwartzkopf * Ernest Hemingway * Sun Tzu * James Jones * Karl Von Klausewitz * James Longstreet * And many others!
