Amazon.com Review
Designed as a transition dictionary for readers in late-elementary school, Webster's New World Children's Dictionary bridges the gap between simple, picture-based dictionaries and the dull-but-necessary ones we all reach for when faced with unknown words. The medium-sized text, example sentences that accompany most definitions, and the miniature pronunciation guide on every page all work nicely together to ensure that kids will understand correct usage without getting overwhelmed with detail. Also included are maps, history and geography pages, and an introductory thesaurus. Especially helpful for younger users is the 10-page guide to dictionary usage, which covers synonyms, homonyms, and the ever-important ways to look up a word when you don't know how to spell it in the first place.

In general, the definitions are easily understandable for children ages 7 to 12, providing accurate answers without being verbose. In Webster's New World College Dictionary, "rebel" is described as "one who engages in armed resistance against the established government of one's country." In this version, you'll find the more kid-friendly definition "a person who fights against any kind of control or authority." --Jill Lightner

5 out of 5 stars The best I've seen, by far.   September 14, 2005

I reviewed all the Children's Dictionaries I could find before selecting this one. It is a beautiful book. Word definitions are clear and easy to understand. Illustrations are colorful and plentiful. Supplementary information is useful and presented in an interesting format. This is one dictionary that is fun just to sit down and read! The CD ROM is also marvelous. My child loves playing the educational word games on it and so do it. There are several varieties of games and different levels of difficulty. The only drawback here is that the CD ROM cannot be used on Mac computers.

I was looking for a child's dictionary and I had two choices picked out. The choices were this one and the Nick Dictionary which I thought my son would like much better but he chose this one. He likes it!! Yesterday he finished his homework as fast as he could to look at it. Here are some things that I like about it:(Nice) Colored pictures, Easy to understand definitions, Atlas pages, Information about the 50 states including the capital, state flag, flower, and state bird, Presidents of the united states to Clinton, The amount of words in this dictionary I think there are 33,000 words in here. I think this dictionary will last him for awhile. If you are looking for a child's dictionary I think this one would be the perfect choice!!!!

No more will my 8 year old ask me how to spell a word. What a great way to teach your son how to begin referencing material. Font size and pictures are perfect for children from 1st grade on up to middle school.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Children's Dictionary!   January 3, 2007

I purchased this dictionary for my two boys (ages 8 and 10) to help them with their school work. The format and illustrations are so engaging that they like to just browse through it from time to time - even without having an assignement! The book contains more words than other children's dictionaries that I've seen, yet is very appropriate for their age level. They will probably use this book well into middle school!
